Chinese Consulate Kolkata Holds Chinese Speech Contest

On 18 Nov., Chinese Consulate General in Kolkata held the fifth Xuan Zang Cup Chinese Speech Contest together with Cheena Bhavan of Visva Bharati at Santiniketan to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and the 72nd anniversary of the founding of the Republic of India.

Acting Consul General Yu Xiong, Cheena Bhavan Head Avijit Banerjee, Heads of Departments of Visva Bharati, teachers and students, and media representatives attended the event. 35 Indian students studying Chinese from 7 universities, including Visva Bharati University, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Dehradoon University, Central University of Gujarat, Aligarh Muslim University, Jamia Millia Islamia University and Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University, participated in the contest.

Mr Yu Xiong delivered a speech in the opening ceremony and said that China and India have achieved remarkable development achievements in the past 70 years. The meeting between the leaders of the two countries at Chennai last month has injected strong momentum into the development of China-India relations. It is hoped that more and more young Indians will learn Chinese and Chinese culture and become envoys of friendly exchanges between China and India. Prof. Avijit Banerjee thanked the Chinese Consulate for strong support to Cheena Bhavan for Chinese teaching, and said he is willing to work with the consulate to promote Chinese language education in Eastern India and promote cultural exchanges between the two countries.

The participants were divided into Junior Group and Senior Group, and gave speeches on themes regarding the 70th China’s National Day, Chinese culture, and China-India friendship. Students from Cheena Bhavan also sang Chinese songs and recited Chinese poems.

After the contest, Mr Yu Xiong paid a courtesy call on Vice Chancellor Prof. Bidyut Chakrabarty and donated school supplies.

Consul Xie Chao, Consul Wang Lifeng, and Consular Attache Zhou Yaoya attended the above events.
