Chinese Community Kolkata Holds "National Day Cup" Basketball Tournament

To celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, Chinese community in Kolkata organized the “National Day Cup” basketball tournament. On July 6th, the opening ceremony was held at Pei May Chinese School in Tangra, Kolkata. More than 200 people including Consul General Zha Liyou, Mr. Manmeet Singh Goindi, Director of Netaji Subhas Eastern Center, Sports Authority of India, representatives of Chinese community and Chinese enterprises were present.

Consul General Zha Liyou lit the auspicious light and thanked Chinese community for their hard work and thoughtful arrangements. He emphasized this year marked the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. Over the past 70 years, Chinese people have made remarkable achievements in national development and rejuvenation under the leadership of Communist Party of China, and have become more confident in roads, theories, system and culture of our nation. Great achievements attribute to the hard work of millions of Chinese people, and also to full support of overseas Chinese. For a long time, Chinese community in Kolkata has made contributions to China’s development and Sino-India relations. Today, we held the first "National Day Cup" basketball tournament to express our patriotism and also promote solidarity of overseas Chinese community. In the end, he wished teams good results and the tournament a complete success.

Mr. Goindi and other guests congratulated the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and spoke highly of the first “National Day Cup” basketball tournament. They believed the tournament was a vivid testimony of China-India friendship and provided a platform for friendly exchanges among Chinese enterprises, Chinese community and local Indian friends. Representatives of Chinese enterprises said they would adhere to the principle of "friendship first, competition second" and enhance exchanges with Chinese community. After the opening ceremony, teams of Chinese Consulate and overseas Chinese had a wonderful opening match.

The basketball tournament will last for 3 months from July 6 to October 1 with more than 30 games. The awarding ceremony will be held at this year's National Day Reception by Chinese Consulate. The tournament was widely reported by local mainstream media like Telegragh and Times of India.
