Chinese Consulate Kolkata Holds Dragon Boat Festival Celebration

On June 2, the Consulate General of the People's Republic of China, in cooperation with Indian Chinese Association for Culture, Welfare and Development, successfully held 2019 Dragon Boat Festival Celebration at Calcutta Boating & Hotel Resorts.

Consul General Zha Liyou; Mr Javed Ahmed Khan, West Bengal Minister of Disaster Management & Fire and Emergency Services; MP Mr Nadimul HaqueMaria; Mr Manmeet Singh Goindi, SAI Eastern Zone Regional Head; Ms Maria Fernandes, Member of West Bengal Women Affairs Commission; Mr Kunal Aggarwal, DC of Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate; Mr Kamal Prakash, President of JSG; Mr Chen Yaohua, Chairman of All India Chinese Association; as well as around 1500 people from various circles in India attended the event.

The Consul General and the guests together painted the eyes of the dragon boats, then waved the flag to start the boat race with five teams of young people from the local overseas Chinese community. Mr Zha then awarded trophy and medals to the winners and presented prizes to Chinese and Indian student representatives.


In his speech, he welcomed friends from all walks of life to celebrate the traditional Chinese festival, wished everyone a happy Dragon Boat Festival, and said that he is very happy to see the Festival has become a brand event to display Chinese culture and promote people-to-people exchanges between China and India, thanks to the efforts of all the friends in local society. He then introduced on China’s celebration of its 70th anniversary, and wished all the best for bilateral relationship. He also briefed the audience on China's Position on the China-US Economic and Trade Consultations released by Chinese State Council Information Office on the day.

Mr Khan and other guests delivered speeches respectively, saying that they are very happy to participate in the event, and are willing to work with the Chinese Consulate to promote bilateral exchanges and cooperation.

Wonderful performances including lion dance, singing and dancing, muscial play were put on on site. Zheng Huiqun, the Consul General’s wife, with the diplomats and family members of the Consulate, Chinese Visa Center staff and local school teachers, sang a classic song of Tagore. Chinese food stalls on the spot served people with delicious Chinese food.
