Mr. Ma Zhanwu, Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Kolkata, met at his residence with Master Shi Dachan, a well-know artist and Buddhist monk, on 17 August 2018.

Mr. Ma expressed his appreciation at the holding of the exhibition of Master Shi Dachan’s calligraphy works and paintings at the Indian Museum Kolkata in the coming week and said it would contribute to the cultural exchanges between China and Eastern India. He stated that the local circles of art have taken note of the exhibition and the newspaper Times of India had also filed a report on it.

Mr. Ma also encouraged the artist to visit the Buddhist places in Eastern India, especially the Mahabodhi Temple in Bodh Gaya, Bihar.

Master Shi Dachan told Mr. Ma that it was his first visit to India and the purpose of the trip was to promote the friendly exchanges between China and India and to give a chance for Indian friends to know more about traditional Chinese calligraphy and painting. He also talked about the style of his own works, saying they are strongly influenced by the traditional Chinese culture and the Zen school of thought.

On 18 August 2018, Mr. Ma attended the inauguration of the exhibition, along with Mr. Rajesh Purohit, Director of the Indian Museum, and over 200 hundred people from different walks of life in the town. A number of media houses sent reporters to cover the event.
