2018/06/22

On 21 June 2018, Mr. Ma Zhanwu, Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Kolkata, attended the International Day of Yoga workshop as organized by the West Bengal Federations of United Nations Associations (WEBFUNA) and the Art of Living Foundation. About 200 participants were present, including Mr. Arup Raha, Air Chief Marshal (retired), Mr. Saugata Roy, Member of Lok Sabha, Mr. Alexey Idamkin, Russian Consul General in Kolkata, Mr. Eaknarayan Aryal, Nepalese Consul General in Kolkata, Mr. Debasish Kumar, MMIC of KMC, Mr. Sitaram Sharma, Chairman of WEBFUNA, Ms. Kusum Musaddi, Additional Secretary General of WEBFUNA. Mr. Shi Lijun, Vice Consul of the Consulate, was also present.

Mr. Ma performed a number of asanas during the program, including a full split, and won applause from the Indian friends. Some even suggest that Mr. Ma should go on the dais to do some demonstration and tutoring. A number of cameramen from the media houses took pictures of Mr. Ma doing the asanas.

During the interactions at the workshop and thereafter, Mr. Ma explained that he had been doing Chinese Taiji (tai chi) for many years and he also loved yoga. He suggested that both Taiji and Yoga would emphasize the efforts to have proper poses and asanas, the breathing that goes with the movements, and the conscious guiding of the mind or the meditation. So people practicing Taiji and Yoga in the two countries respectively should conduct more exchanges and learn from each other for mutual benefit.

On 22 June 2018, The Telegraph carried a picture of Mr. Ma doing yoga in its Metro section.
