In his remarks, Mr. Ma Zhanwu welcomed and thanked the distinguished guests, and all others present, and expressed his appreciation of support from the West Bengal Government and the Indian Embassy and consulates in China.

Mr. Ma said that both China and India are great countries with a long history, and both have produced many great educators. China has Confucius in ancient times, and Tao Xingzhi in modern times. India has Gautama Buddha in ancient times, and Sarvepalli Radha Krishnan, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, Rabindranath Tagore and Swami Vivekananda in modern times. Both Chinese and Indian people attach great importance to education, and parents in both countries aspire to make their children successful through education. This is why the Indian film Hindi Medium is so popular in China.

He said that educational exchanges are an important part of China-India relations, and of people-to-people exchanges between the two countries in particular. Studying abroad enables students to have a comprehensive understanding of the receiving countries and is of great significance in promoting the in-depth development of China-India relations. At present, there are more than 18,000 Indian students studying in China, and more than 2,000 Chinese students studying in India, which is far from enough. It is believed that with the joint efforts of both sides, the number of Indian students will increase in the coming years, and it will be the same for Chinese students studying on Indian campuses.

He emphasized that this expo is held only 12 days after the meeting between President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Modi in Wuhan, and it is one of the measures to implement the consensus reached by the two leaders on strengthening cultural exchanges. We also hope to send such a message to people in Eastern India through this expo: China attaches great importance to China-India relations, and is willing to advance educational exchanges with Eastern India. It is sincerely hoped that this expo will enhance the mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples, increase exchanges and cooperation between China and Eastern India, and in particular, attract more Indian students to go and study in China. In the coming months, the Chinese Consulate will continue to hold similar events and expects to work together with people from all walks of life in Eastern India to further promote the friendly ties between China and India.

Dr. Samanta and other guests of honour congratulated the organizers on the opening of the expo, thanked Mr. Ma for his speech, and expressed appreciation of the efforts made by the consulate to hold the expo and to promote relations between Eastern India and China. They welcomed the Chinese universities coming to the expo, and said that China has a high-quality education system and it is the right choice for Indian students to go to study in Chinese universities and learn knowledge and develop careers, and they look forward to working together with the consulate, and promote exchanges and cooperation between universities of the two countries, so as to further promote the development ties between Eastern India and China.

The performances featuring traditional Chinese music, peacock dance, martial arts and lion dance were presented on the occasion.

After the inauguration, Mr. Ma together with Dr. Shukla and other guests visited the expo stalls and interacted with teachers and students at the Expo. Mr. Ma then met with teachers and students from the Mahadevi Birla World Academy, who were visiting China this weekend, and answered questions from the media.

Deputy Consul General Cai Zhifeng, Consul Li Suyun, Consul Zhang Jing, Consul Wang Lifeng and Vice Consul Xie Chao were also present at the event.
