Chinese Consulate Kolkata Holds Spring Festival Reception

With the traditional Chinese Spring Festival only five days away, the Consulate General of the People's Republic of China in Kolkata held a reception at Hotel Hyatt Regency on 11 February 2018.

Over 600 people were present at the function, including Mr. Debashis Sen, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary of the Government of West Bengal and Chairman cum Managing Director of WBHIDCO Ltd; Mr. Haider Aziz Safwi, Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of West Bengal; Mr. Manmeet Singh Goindi, Director (Eastern and Northeast Region) of the Indian Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports; Mr. Kuldip Singh Sheoran, Inspector General and Commander of Indian Coast Guard Region (NE); Dr. Maria Fernandes, member of the West Bengal Commission for Woman and Senior Vice President of the West Bengal TMC Minority Commission; Dr. Soma Bandyopadhyay, Director of the Indian Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management; Dr. Achyuta Samanta, founder of Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) and Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) and General President of the Indian Science Congress Association; Dr. Avijit Banerjee, Head of Cheena Bhavana of Visva Bharati University; members from the local Chinese community,;staff members with the Chinese companies in Eastern India; all members from the Consulate; as well invited Indian friends.

Consul General Ma Zhanwu spoke on this occasion and sent his Chinese New Year greetings and wishes to all those present and to the whole Chinese community in the region. Introducing Chinese Spring Festival to the august gathering, Mr. Ma said that Spring Festival is the most important in China, just like Durga Puja in West Bengal. He said Spring Festival is the time for decorations, good wishes, merry making, and cultural performances.

While welcoming the Year of Dog, Mr. Ma spoke about the achievements made by China in the Year of the Rooster, which is on its way out. Stating how the world gave attention to the successful 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC), which established Xi Jinping as the core for the CPC Central Committee as well as for the whole Party and established the Xi Jinping Thought of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, he emphasized that this was a very important event for China and the world at large.

Mr. Ma said China achieved a lot of things in economic, social, scientific and other areas in the Year of Rooster. For example, China successfully cloned a Monkey about two weeks before!

As for China-India relations, the past year was also very important. The relationship went through ups and downs and became more mature. Very importantly the trade relations between India and China increased significantly and witnessed a record high volume of US$ 88 billion. China’s investment in India including in West Bengal is increasing very fast. Relations between Eastern Indian states and China are growing rapidly with more interactions.

Mr. Ma also informed the gathering that one family from Kolkata would be holding their wedding celebration in Kunming, China. Over 600 family members and friends of theirs will be part of the wedding party. This is the first time that such a large-scale Indian-style wedding will be held in China. Mr. Ma said that social events like this show that the work the consulate has been doing is successful and is showing good results.

Mr. Ma said that in the coming year, the Year of Dog, the consulate will have many more programs. He promised that his Consulate would continue to work closely with the Chinese community and all Indian friends to further promote friendly exchanges and cooperation between China and the region, and hoped to have their continued support and assistance.

The joyful reception also featured Indian traditional dance staged by the Chinese and Indians with the staff of the consulate, a beautiful Chinese dance by 19 dancers from China, a traditional Chinese music show by a performer from China, a magic show by a renowned magician from China, a ballet on shoulders by performers from China and a Lion Dance performed by local Chinese and Indians. A number of cultural mementos from China were also distributed after the lucky draw during the function.
