Chinese Consulate Kolkata Holds Prize-giving Ceremony in Odisha, India

On 9 February 2018, the Consulate General of the People's Republic of China in Kolkata held a prize-giving ceremony in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India for the Knowledge Contest on China-India Friendship and the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China. About 50 people were present at the event, including winners of the contest and their family members, reporters from media houses like Dharitri, Sanmarg, News18 and Navbharat.

Mr. Ma Zhanwu, Consul General of the People's Republic of China in Kolkata, welcomed everyone from Odisha, and said that the Knowledge Contest was aimed at promoting the friendly exchanges and cooperation between China and the five eastern states of India, including Odisha, and at fostering a strong understanding of China and the bilateral relationship amongst the Indian people.

Mr. Ma also shared that during his meeting with Chief Secretary of the Government of Odisha Mr. Aditya Prasad Padhi earlier in the day, he had extended an invitation to the latter and to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik for them to visit China in the coming months to promote Odisha and develop relations with different provinces in China.

He further said that the two countries have a lot in common, and that in ancient times Odisha had strong trade ties with China. Mr. Ma said that the Chinese companies like Vivo and Oppo currently operating in Odisha are very active, employing thousands of local workers, and more companies are keen on coming to Odisha to explore opportunities, especially in the fields of mining, coal and manufacturing.

Highlighting how some provinces of China like Fujian and Yunnan are interested in developing trade ties with Odisha,  Mr. Ma said already several items from Odisha are very popular in China like prawns, handicraft and art. Speaking about the tourism potentials of Odisha Mr. Ma said more and more  Chinese citizens will be visiting Odisha as tourists with growth of the bilateral interactions..

Talking about his visit to Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) and Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) campuses in Bhubaneswar, Odisha in the morning, Mr. Ma said that he hoped both these institutions would be able to tie up with educational institutions in China in the coming months.

Mr. Ma said that China wishes to establish cultural, educational and economic ties and conduct investment cooperation with Odisha along with further development of the relations between the two countries.

Expressing his gratitude to members of the audience for their participation in the Knowledge Contest and congratulating them on their winning the prizes,  Mr. Ma said he was overwhelmed by the enthusiasm of the participants.

In conclusion, Mr. Ma said that ties between China and Odisha will continue to grow in the coming months and years with joint efforts, and he urged the audience to join his consulate in further developing the relationship between China and Odisha.

Following the speech, Mr. Ma handed over prizes  to the winners of the contest. First prize winners Mr. Anubhab Padhi and Mr. Debasish Srichandan Padhi won a complimentary one-week trip to China in April 2018. Encouragement prizes were given to the other participants from Odisha.

Thereafter, winners and participants interacted with Mr. Ma and shared their experiences regarding Chinese culture and their thought on China-India relationship.

In his interview with the media, Mr. Ma emphasized that he is confident that China and Odisha will witness further friendly exchanges and mutually beneficial cooperation in the coming years., and the Chinese Consulate will extend full support in this regard.

Consular Attaché Mr. Liu Li and Mr. Chen Guangning too were present at the meeting.
