Consul General Ma Zhanwu Addresses in Jadavpur University

Mr. Ma Zhanwu, Consul General of the People's Republic of China in Kolkata,invited by Dr.Kakoli Sengupta,Head of Department of International Relations, gave a speech on the topic of "Thinking Through Gender" in Jadavpur University , Kolkata on 6 February 2018. Over 100 local professors and teachers were present in the audience.

Consul General Ma said that the Chinese government has attached great importance to women's development and progress and has regarded gender equality as a basic state policy to promote national social development.The Chinese government has formulated national macro policies with the principles of equal participation, common development and mutual benefit of men and women to ensure strong political guarantee and legal guarantee for women development.Since the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, the status of women has been continuously improved, and great progress has been made in rights and interests of women.Women have equal access to education, employment and participation in national economic and social decision-making. In addition, Chinese women don’t have to change their names after marriage andaren’t supposed to accompany dowries or even require color gifts for marriage. Women in other countries are very envious of that.

Consul general Ma also said that because of the influence of historical tradition and so on, Chinahas a long way to go in women rights protection including equal pay for equal work, comprehensive legal enforcement.

The audiences expressed that Consul general Ma’s speech gave them a profound understanding of the equality between men and women as well as the current Chinese women's rights and interests protection. They will pay more attention to China's development and China-India relations and also hope to have the opportunity to visit China.
