Consul General Ma Zhanwu Briefs India Media on the 19th National Congress of CPC

Mr. Ma Zhanwu, Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Kolkata, held a press briefing at Hotel Oberoi Grand,West Bengal, India on 27 October 2017, during which he shared the details of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC), and explained the key messages contained in the report delivered by CPC General Secretary Xi Jinping during the Congress. More than 60 correspondents from different mainstream local media were present.

Mr. Ma remarked that, concluded successfully in Beijing, China just a few days back, the Congress passed resolutions on the Report of the 18th Central Committee, the Report on the Work of the 18th Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI), and the Revised Constitution of the Communist Party of China, and it also elected the new Central Committee and CCDI of CPC. The first plenary session of the new Central Committee of CPC then elected the members of Central Committee's Political Bureau and the Political Bureau Standing Committee. And Mr. Xi Jinping was re-elected as the General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee.

Mr. Ma noted that the Congress is a significant one not only for China, but also for the whole world. On the basis of an analysis of the developments in the international and domestic environments and a review of the Party's work and the historic change over the past five years, the Congress forms the major political judgments that socialism with Chinese characteristics has entered a new era and the principal contradiction in the Chinese society has evolved into one between unbalanced and inadequate development and the people's ever-growing needs for a better life. The Congress elaborated on the Party's historic mission in the new era and established the historical position of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era. It set forth the 14 basic policies for upholding and developing socialism with Chinese characteristics in the new era, and established the goal of securing a decisive victory in building a moderately prosperous society in all respects and then embarking on a journey to fully build a modern socialist China. The Congress also set out an overall plan for advancing the great cause of socialism with Chinese characteristics and the great new project of Party building in the new era.

Mr. Ma emphasized that China will adhere to the path of peaceful development, hold high the banner of peace, development, cooperation, and mutual benefit, and uphold its fundamental foreign policy goal of preserving world peace and promoting common development. China remains firm in its commitment to strengthening friendship and cooperation with other countries on the basis of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence. It will actively promote international cooperation through the Belt and Road Initiative, and continue to take an active part in reforming and developing the global governance system. It will work toward a new form of international relations featuring mutual respect, fairness, justice, and win-win cooperation and a community with a shared future for mankind, and work together with the people of all countries to build an open, inclusive, clean, and beautiful world that enjoys lasting peace, universal security, and common prosperity.

Mr. Ma stressed that the Congress was both successful and democratic. The drafting of the above-mentioned report, the selection of the Congress delegates, and the candidates of the members of the CPC Central Committee, its leading bodies and the CCDI were done with a true spirit of democracy. The Congress has once again demonstrated the people is the center of work of the Party, and its report contains many specific beneficial measures and policies for the ordinary people. Now all CPC members and the Chinese people are inspired, hopeful and energized, ready to work harder to realize the Chinese Dream of national rejuvenation. The international community has also given much attention to the Congress, with hundreds of leaders abroad having sent their congratulatory messages or letters.

Mr. Ma said that the Chinese Consulate will implement the spirit of the 19th CPC National Congress and work for closer ties and more exchanges between China and Eastern India. And it is hoped that the Indian friends could work together with the Consulate, to further promote the interactions between the two sides.

Mr. Ma then announced the immediate launch of the Knowledge Test on China-India Friendship and the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China. He also gave a briefing on some other cultural and economic exchange programs conducted by the Consulate.

Mr Ma interacted with the media representatives and answered several questions concerning the Congress, China-India relations, as well as the Knowledge Test. He further elaborated on why Mr. Xi Jinping has become the core of the Central Committee of CPC and and the Party, and what the significance of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era is.

The journalists expressed their admiration at the success of the Congress, saying that they have paid close attention to it. They thanked the Consulate for holding this press briefing, and said Consul General Ma’s presentation was informative and helpful. They promised to stay in touch with the Consulate in order to learn more about the developments in China’ in the new era.

The Consulate staff members distributed text materials such as President Xi's report to the 19th CPC National Congress, Resolutions on CPC Central Committee report, CCDI work report, and amendment to CPC Constitution.

Consul Zhang Jing, Vice Consul Shi Lijun, Consular Attache Chen Ankai, and Ms. Chen Fei from the Consulate were also present at the event.
