2017/10/04

Mr. Ma Zhanwu, Consul General of the Peoples Republic of China in Kolkata, attended the Durga Puja parade in Kolkata in West Bengal, India on 3 October 2017, and had a conversation with Ms. Mamata Banerjee, Chief Minister of the state government of West Bengal. Mr. Cai Zhifeng, Deputy Consul General, and others with the consulate were also present at the function.

The Chief Minister told Mr. Ma that this was the second time for the state government to hold the Durga Puja parade, and altogether 68 pandals participated in it. It lasted 3 hours in total. She also asked how the Consul General liked it.

Mr. Ma said that the parade gave a vivid demonstration of the rich culture and arts of West Bengal, including the making of pandals and idols, folk dances and singing, which was impressively fantastic. The 3 hours felt like just a short while. He also said that Kolkata is now well-known for the parade. And the Chinese Consulate would like to participate in it in a proper way and give a demonstration of some elements of the Chinese culture, such as lion dance.

Ms. Banerjee said that the parade has a global nature and she would welcome participation of China and other foreign countries.

Consul General Ma expressed his appreciation at the above statement and said his consulate would keep in contact with the state government regarding China's participation in the future.
