Chinese Consulate in Kolkata Holds Paper Cutting Exchanges

At the invitation of the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Kolkata, Yunnan Chinese Culture Promotion Society(YCCPS) had a “Belt and Road” Paper Cutting Art Exhibition and exchanges with Indian friends in Kolkata from 10 June to 13 June 2017.

Mme. Qin Guizhen, Chairperson of YCCPS, Mr. Wang Zhongde, Deputy Secretary-General of YCCPS, Mr. Wang Xinmu, Executive Director of YCCPS, and Mme. Yang Qihui, Executive Director of YCCPS attended the Second All India Dragon Boat Festival on 11 June. Mr. Wang Xinmu did paper-cut silhouettes for Mr. Javed Ahmed Khan, Minister-in-charge for Disaster Management and Civil Defence of the State Government of West Bengal, and Professor Maria Fernandes, Vice Chairperson of the Minorities Commission of the State Government, and other guests. Mme. Yang taught guests to cut paper flowers. Many paper cutting art works were put on display during the festival.

The Chinese artists went on to give exhibition and have exchanges at Modern High School for Girls, Dakshini Prayash School for underprivileged children in Kolkata, and Tagore Museum on 12 June and 13 June, and received warm welcome.

At these functions, Chinese Consul General Ma Zhanwu gave introduction of the Chinese paper cutting art, saying this is one important traditional Chinese handicraft, which adds luster to Chinese traditional festival. He encouraged Indian friends to get to know more about it and learn how to do it, which helps edify body and mind and beautify living environment. The Indian friends gave highly complimentary remarks to the paper cutting art show and the artists. The Indian children fell in love with the paper cutting and thought it magical.

Consul General Ma also met with the Chinese artists at his residence to have further discussion on 12 June 2017.

Consuls Li Suyun, Zhang Jing, Chen Yongliang, and Consular Attache Chen Ankai were present at the above functions.
