Consul General Ma Zhanwu Meets State Official in India

Mr. Ma Zhanwu, Consul General of the People's Republic of China in Kolkata, met with Professor Maria Fernandes, Deputy Chairperson of West Bengal Minorities Commission on 18 April 2017, to exchange views on issues about local Chinese community. Deputy Consul General Cai Zhifeng and Consul Li Suyun were present.

Ms. Fernandes said she maintained close relations with Indian Chinese in Kolkata, attended many activities of the Chinese community, and supported their efforts to preserve the unique Chinese heritage. She would like to keep close contact with the Chinese Consulate and have discussion on how to revitalize the China Town and promote the Chinese culture among the local residents, including holding the Second All India’s Dragon Boat Festival, repairing Chinese temples and opening the night market at China town..

Mr. Ma said that the Chinese culture had become part of the overall culture in Kolkata now, the efforts that Ms. Fernandes had made in promoting traditional Chinese culture and facilitating the positive interactions between the Chinese community and the mainstream groups were much appreciated. The Chinese Consulate would like to have more cooperation with the West Bengal State Government in such endeavors.

Mr. Ma invited Ms. Fernandes to lead a group of young Indian Chinese from West Bengal to visit China in the coming months to learn more about the country, and the latter said she was ready to contribute to exchanges between the Indian Chinese and the young people in China.
