2019/11/04

On November 4, 2019, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks in Shanghai with Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio of Italy, who was here for the second China International Import Expo (CIIE).

Wang Yi welcomed Luigi Di Maio and his delegation for the second CIIE. Wang Yi said, China's hosting of the CIIE shows its determination and sincerity to open up wider to the outside world with concrete actions, and to let the world better share China's development opportunities. It is believed that the participation of Italy, one of the Guest of Honor Countries for the second CIIE, will help increase Italian exports to China and promote further development of bilateral economic and trade relations.

Wang Yi said, China and Italy enjoy an all-round relationship. The two sides always respect, appreciate, understand and support each other, sharing much consensus and common interests in advocating multilateralism and safeguarding free trade. China and Italy are stellar representatives of Eastern and Western civilizations. Our cooperation is not only in the interests of both sides, but also conforms to the trend of the times, and will inject positive energy into the current uncertain world. The Chinese side cherishes its friendship and mutual trust with the Italian side, and is willing to take the opportunity of celebrating the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries next year to review the successful experience and plan for future development. The Chinese side appreciates the Italian side's long-term and strategic vision in developing relations with China, and is willing to work together with the Italian side to promote deeper and more concrete cooperation in jointly building the Belt and Road Initiative. The two sides should strive to boost people-to-people and cultural exchanges, and ensure the success of the China-Italy year of culture and tourism next year. It is hoped that the Italian side will play a constructive role in promoting the European Union (EU) to continue keeping the trade and investment market open, and play an active and demonstration role in the development of China-EU relations.

Luigi Di Maio expressed his great pleasure to attend the CIIE on behalf of Italy. China is a very significant strategic cooperation partner of Italy. The Italian side commends China for its great achievements in development and its outstanding ability to cope with global challenges and promote sustainable development. Italy is pleased to sign the cooperation document on building the Belt and Road Initiative with the Chinese side, and is ready to actively promote the cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative to bear more fruits. Both Italy and China are countries with time-honored histories and cultures, and support multilateralism. Next year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The Italian side is ready to, together with the Chinese side, maintain close high-level exchanges, strengthen people-to-people and cultural exchanges, and further consolidate and deepen bilateral friendship and cooperation. The Italian side is ready to provide an open, fair and non-discriminatory environment for Chinese enterprises' investment and cooperation in Europe. Italy will continue to play a positive role in promoting the sound development of EU-China relations.

Both sides also exchanged views on international and regional issues of common concern.

Wang Yi and Luigi Di Maio also visited the Memorial for the Site of the First National Congress of the Communist Party of China.
