Wang Yi Holds a Group Meeting with Diplomatic Envoys of the European Union (EU) and Its Member States to China
2019/05/17

On May 17, 2019, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi held a group meeting with diplomatic envoys of the European Union (EU) and its 27 member states to China in Beijing.

Wang Yi said that China highly values the role and influence of the EU in international affairs. As comprehensive strategic cooperative partners, China and the EU share the common interests that far exceed the differences. This year, President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang both chose Europe for their first visits, while more than 10 European leaders visited China successively and attended relevant activities. The frequent and close high-level exchanges have injected new vitality and impetus into China-Europe relations. We should well implement the outcomes of high-level exchanges, enhance mutual understanding and trust, respect each others' core interests, properly handle differences, and maintain the overall sound and stable China-Europe relations. We should align the Belt and Road Initiative with the EU Strategy on Connecting Europe and Asia, and make the Belt and Road Initiative a new highlight of China-Europe cooperation under the principle of extensive consultation, joint contribution and shared benefits, so as to contribute to the sustainable growth of the global economy.

Wang Yi stressed that China and the EU share a common position in upholding multilateralism, building an open world economy, and opposing protectionism and unilateralism. In the face of the complex and volatile international landscape, the two sides should strengthen communication in international and regional affairs and jointly safeguard the basic norms governing international relations with the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter at the core and the rules-based multilateral trading system. The two sides should promote mutual respect, in-depth exchanges, and mutual learning among different civilizations, and work together to drive the development of human civilization and social progress.

Head of the EU delegation to China and diplomatic envoys of the EU member states to China said that Europe attaches great importance to the responsibility and role of China as a major country, and the two sides share extensive common interests. Under the current situation, upholding multilateralism and promoting free trade not only conform to the interests of the both sides, but also have great significance to world stability and development. The EU side takes a positive attitude towards participating in the joint construction of the Belt and Road Initiative and is willing to work with the Chinese side to well implement the important consensus reached by the EU and Chinese leaders, strengthen coordination and cooperation in international and regional affairs, and push bilateral relations for more positive results.

The two sides also exchanged views on international and regional issues concerning the Korean Peninsula, Iran, Venezuela, and global governance. Wang Yi comprehensively introduced China's principled position on handling the trade frictions between China and the United States to the diplomatic envoys.
