Han Zheng Meets with President Moon Jae-in of the ROK

On the afternoon of February 8, 2018 local time, Special Envoy of President Xi Jinping and Member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China Han Zheng, who attended at invitation the opening ceremony of the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics held in the Republic of Korea (ROK), met with President Moon Jae-in of the ROK at Chong Wa Dae in Seoul.

Han Zheng conveyed the greetings of President Xi Jinping to President Moon Jae-in and wished the complete success of the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. Han Zheng expressed that China and the ROK are natural cooperative partners who share geographical proximity. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1992, bilateral relations have achieved all-round development. Last December, Mr. President paid a successful state visit to China. At the beginning of this year, President Xi Jinping held telephone talks with Mr. President. The two heads of state have reached important consensus on developing China-ROK relations and strengthening coordination on major regional and international issues. China stands ready to, together with the ROK, walk along the course charted by the consensus of the two heads of state, uphold mutual respect and support, comprehensively conduct communication and dialogue at all levels, further activate exchanges and cooperation, properly well handle sensitive issues and increase mutual understanding and trust, so as to jointly promote China-ROK relations for constant and forward-looking development.

Han Zheng expressed that there have been positive changes of the situation in the Korean Peninsula recently. The ROK and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) take the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics as an opportunity to resume the dialogue and carry out cooperation. The ROK-DPRK relations have been improved with progress. China supports reconciliation and cooperation between the ROK and the DPRK. It is hoped that various relevant parties could meet each other halfway and make joint efforts to further ease the Korean Peninsula situation and promote the process of political settlement of the Korean Peninsula issue.

Moon Jae-in asked Han Zheng to convey his warm greetings to President Xi Jinping and thanked Han Zheng for coming to the ROK to attend the opening ceremony of the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics as Special Envoy of President Xi Jinping. Moon Jae-in expressed that the ROK and China are important neighbors and cooperative partners. As bilateral relations are standing at a new staring point, the ROK stands ready to, together with China, make positive efforts, increase political mutual trust and friendship, intensify exchanges at all levels, deepen practical cooperation and enhance communication and coordination on international and regional issues, in a bid to push forward ROK-China strategic cooperative partnership for new progress. The ROK side appreciates that China has played a positive role in the DPRK issue. The ROK stands ready to maintain positive communication and coordination with China, promote the sustainability of the ROK-DPRK dialogue which is facilitated by the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, and solve the Peninsula issue through peaceful means, so as to achieve sustainable peace and prosperity in the region.
