Yang Jiechi Meets with Foreign Minister Taro Kono of Japan

On January 28, 2018, Member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and State Councilor Yang Jiechi met in Beijing with Foreign Minister Taro Kono of Japan.

Yang Jiechi expressed that this year marks the 40th anniversary of the signing of China-Japan Treaty of Peace and Friendship. Both sides should seize opportunities, eliminate disturbances and consolidate and expand favorable factors, so as to promote sustainable improvement and development of China-Japan relations. It is hoped that Japan will work with China to review the spirit of the treaty, safeguard political foundation, be firm in peaceful and friendly beliefs, accurately seize each other's position, respect each other's core interests and major concerns, adhere to principles of four political documents between the two countries, properly handle historical and other major sensitive issues, control contradictions and differences, expand mutually beneficial cooperation and take more practical actions, so as to make efforts to improve and develop China-Japan relations along the right direction.

Taro Kono said that Japan is willing to take the commemoration of Japan-China Treaty of Peace and Friendship as an opportunity to meet China halfway, deepen political mutual trust and enhance exchanges at high level and across all levels, and expand practical cooperation, in a bid to comprehensively improve relations between the two countries.
